Custom second-cycle living soil in 7-gallon Rain Science bags. Built by reclaiming the soil from two previous 9-gallon outdoor auto planters. Root balls were broken up and removed, then both batches were combined and thoroughly blended before being re-amended. Each 10-gallon batch received fresh Coast of Maine Stonington Blend, additional earthworm castings, charged biochar (pre-charged with EWC, fish hydrolysate, and molasses), Stonington Plant Food, kelp meal, lobster meal, Stoned Dust, and extra pumice to restore structure and aeration. After amendment, the soil was pre-moistened and allowed to “cook” for several days before planting. Each 7-gallon Rain Science bag was filled from the blended mix, leaving a central seed cavity that was dusted with Mykos and Azos before being filled with Sprout Island Seed Starter Soil to provide a gentle, biologically active germination zone surrounded by the richer amended living soil. The goal was to provide a highly aerated, microbially active organic medium with a mild seed-start environment transitioning naturally into a nutrient-rich living soil capable of supporting the plants through most of the grow with minimal bottled inputs.
