Should I cut (lollipop) again?

It’s 8th day in flower. Usually I don’t want stress the girls anymore so much. I lollipopped them already some days before flower. But now they are again out of control under the leaves roof top with big shadows. I think I have to take the pots totally out again and cut it again thinner inside. No chance on the floor with scrog net. What would you do? Can you give me some advice please?

I would for sure get in there and clean them up again.

I don’t until week 3 of flower. The first 21 days matter so much for development of the buds. Any stress during that time will hinder that process.

So you say it’s better to wait till week 3 for cutting again?

If you have good genetics and you have everything dialed in, you won’t have any issues. You already done your lollipop, you’re just pulling the fans off trying to get better light penetration.

Watch the lectures Dr Bruce Bugbee has on YouTube about stress on a plant and defoliation in flower. If the leaves pose that much of an issue, tuck them for the 21 days and then remove. It doesn’t matter how dialed the environment is, stress is still stress on a plant. For me I prefer not to make it work harder in flower to heal cut wounds and produce the size buds it’s capable of doing. Now with that said while it is not recommended I think many of us have done a defoliation in weeks 1-3. It won’t ruin the harvest but it may short you a few grams in the end. Even 1 gram is more than I want to lose after months of work.

I should have been a little more clear than just clean them up.

I’m trying to find the video and the timestamp. He owns apogee instruments and is also the guy who grows weed for NASA. He also has a course he teaches at a university for marijuana/hemp cultivation. I found an AMA of his on reddit though for now. I will keep looking for the video as I have a chance today.

This is the most recent from him on this topic. It’s still not a direct answer. It’s more an up to you thing. It’s been a few years since I looked into this. He does state it can/will impact your yield though.

Thanks a lot @BluntForceTrauma420 - very very interesting. First of all I have to say that my english is not the most worst and not the best. I’m from germany by the way. I saw the interview with Dr. Bruce Bugbee and I understood it in this way.

1. Don’t defoliation and pruning branches and leaves, if you don’t want stress your plant, because you take biomass and the possibility for better photosynthesis. Your plant will becomes bigger, but you will have more work at harvest and trimming, because you will also have these small buds.

… I lollipopped already and have enough airflow at the base of the plant. So maybe I will try to do nothing? Who want this experiment?

2. Or do defoliation and pruning branches and leaves for bigger buds at the top of the plant and easier harvest + trimming + better light flooding at the lower buds and leaves.

Which way gives me more yield? Does anyone tried this 2 experiments already indoor with approximately the same conditions? I’m open to listen you all guys. What experiment should I do first? 1 or 2?

I’d say if you have 2 plants of the same genetics I’d do one plant one way and the other plant gets the other treatment. If they aren’t the same genetics there is a wider area for interpretation. And I would start with what makes you most comfortable or excited. As for your ability to speak English, you do it better than many native speakers. And if you ever have to slip in German to make it easier to explain that’s fine. We have Google translate, I have friends in Germany too from when I was stationed there. I can always ask them to translate if Google fails me.

I’m pretty sure it was an interview with Mr Growit on YouTube. I have to sift through the video to find it. But the link I shared I think is more recent. So it’s possible his view changed as he does more research. For me his research is the gold standard and I’ll listen to his opinion on all things grow related. Even when his opinion is different than it was when I originally found his material.

I have to tell you. It’s my 3rd grow. 1st was with 10x 2.9 gallon pots and 2nd was with 5 x 2.9 gallons. 11L.

I tried this way with 3 x 15 gallon pots, because germany start low legalization next year. Very stupid laws, but I wanted to know what’s possible with 3 plants.

That’s my background. I’m really not an expert. I just like testing and experiments.

I use translator sometimes for single words I don’t know.

3 different genetics. I will think about it again and decide next days. I thought more people will answer with many years of experience and many grows.

Finally I just don’t want to make a big mistake after this huge effort and experiment. It’s totally different to my first 2 grows. Was just boring during corona time

After my initial lollipop clean up. I just keep it cleaned up as it grows. New bud sites and larf will just get pulled off as its starting. I haven’t had any problems doing so.

I will do it in this way. Very very low low stress. Just removing some lowest new leaves by hand. That’s it.

My next grow will be the easiest ever with one plant in small pot everything automatic in winter when I have very short days and no energy from my photovoltaik system.

This will be my next experiment. As cheap and time friendly as possible. No joke. I will do the totally opposite next try.
